Economical Insurance Group
The Economical Insurance Group began in Kitchener (then Berlin), Ontario with a group of
people with a plan to protect their neighbours from devastating financial hardship caused by
fire. They formed The Economical Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Berlin and issued the
first policy on a house and barn on November 25, 1871.
Today, the Canadian-owned Economical Insurance Group is the largest property and
casualty mutual insurer in Canada serving customers from coast to coast. The company has held fast to its
"neighbour helping neighbour" philosophy. It contributes to communities by sponsoring
fund raising events and enthusiastically supporting local charities. They also live our philosophy
daily when we serve our customers.
Economical's 1,300 employees are dedicated to serving over 700,000 policyholders through offices
across Canada.
